Four reasons to book a Christmas markets cruise

Cruise Circle
1. Fairytale destinations yule be sorry to miss

Transporting you right into the heart of the holiday season, destinations on these cruises feature hillsides twinkling with lights or old-world towns with cobbled streets dressed up to the nines in colourful decorations.

2. Interesting (and sometimes surprising!) Christmas culture

Learn about the traditions of our European neighbours, from advent in Alsace to age-old rituals of wreath-making in Austria, with storytelling evenings also held throughout December. Beware though – some legendary figures are friendlier than others! Krampusnacht (Dec 5th) is celebrated across Germany and Alpine areas in Europe, featuring a goat-like monster called Krampus, kitted out with claws, horns and a long tongue.

3. One-of-a-kind gifts

Wandering around chalet-like stalls packed to the brim with festive-themed goodies, you'll find unique arts and crafts pieces that aren't commonly found in the UK.

For example Colmar, a pretty little town in the Alsace region of France, framed by half-timbered houses and elegantly decorated canals, features a market dedicated to artisan crafts from local Alsatians, found inside the Koïfhus, a renaissance building, in addition to the main market in Place des Dominicains. Together you'll find all sorts of painters, glass-blowers, candle makers and ceramic keepsakes.

4. Festive fayre and seasonal succulence

No Christmas markets guide is complete without mentioning the food. A firm favourite in Belgium is the iconic waffle - sweet, fluffy and topped with world-famous chocolate, it’d be a crime not to indulge.

Getting hungary in Budapest? (pun intended). Then aromas of Gulyásleves (Goulash soup), Sült gesztenye (roasted chestnuts) and chimney cake will make your mouth water.

Venturing through Germany’s winter Rhineland? Then warm the cockles with a famous Rüdesheimer Coffee. Named after the town that created it, this drink is a delicious concoction of local Asbach Uralt brandy, sugar cubes, whipped cream and shaved chocolate, served up in a traditional Rüdesheim coffee set.
