Cruising De-Mystified
Don't know your port from your starboard? Don't know if you should book a drinks package, or what gratuities are? In our new series, we will break down some of the jargon related to cruising and give you some tips and insights to help plan your next cruise holiday.
Should I pre-book a drinks package?
Here are a few factors to consider:
1. Level of drink consumption
If you anticipate consuming many alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages throughout your cruise, a drinks package might be a cost-effective option. It can provide unlimited access to a wide range of beverages without worrying about individual prices.
2. Beverage selection
Evaluate the variety of drinks available on board and the types of beverages you typically enjoy. If you prefer premium or speciality drinks that aren't in the standard cruise ship offerings, a drinks package might be worthwhile as it often covers a broader selection.
3. Onshore activities
Consider how often you plan to be off the ship and engaged in onshore activities. If you anticipate spending significant time exploring ports of call, you will have fewer opportunities to utilise a drinks package fully.
4. Budget
Assess your overall budget and determine if purchasing a drinks package aligns with your financial considerations. Compare the cost of the package to the individual prices of the beverages you typically consume to decide whether or not it offers savings.
5. Non-alcoholic options
Take note of the availability and inclusivity of non-alcoholic beverages on the ship. If you primarily consume non-alcoholic drinks, evaluate if the drinks package includes a wide selection of non-alcoholic options and whether it would be worth the investment.
What are cruise line gratuities?
Often a hot topic in cruising, gratuities, service charges or tips are fees added to a passenger's onboard account to compensate the ship's crew members for their services. These gratuities typically cover the wages of dining room staff, cabin stewards, and other service personnel who assist guests during their cruise.
The specific amount and policies regarding gratuities vary among different cruise lines. Some cruise lines include gratuities in the overall cruise fare, such as MSC, Virgin Voyages and P&O, while others add them as a daily per-person charge to your onboard account. The cruise line usually suggests the gratuity amount, but passengers can adjust or remove the costs if desired.
Gratuities are intended to recognise the hard work and service the ship's crew provides, who often work long hours to ensure a pleasant experience for passengers. It is customary to offer additional tips for exceptional services, such as to a particular crew member who went above and beyond.
